My Unit Always Needs Freon
We often receive an AC repair call with the homeowner stating that they want to put Freon in their system, below is information about how that happens, why it happens and what you can do to remedy the issue with the help of Green Cooling Solutions.
Effects of low Freon
Many systems in the Sarasota area leak Freon and require a periodic recharge, While simply charging the unit may be the most inexpensive option in the short-term, it is certainly not the best use of a homeowner's money. With Freon prices rising as much as 500% in the last 10 years it is a much better idea to find and fix the leak. Remember Freon is never consumed; it cycles through the system indefinitely. If you are having to add Freon to a system, it is leaking and should be repaired.
Environmental Impact
Freon is a known “fluorocarbon pollutant”. When released due to leaks in air conditioning systems it accumulates in the upper atmosphere and displaces ozone. Ozone acts as a protective layer against harmful ultraviolet light. (Freon is a DuPont tradename but is used as a generic term by many scientists.). Due to this, the use, sale and production of Freon is tightly regulated by the EPA. For these reasons Green Cooling Solutions always recommends that Freon leaks are found and repaired as soon as possible.
Finding a Freon leak
At Green Cooling Solutions we use several different methods to locate Freon leaks. Usually, we begin with a simple electronic check with a “sniffer”. This “sniffer” smells the chlorine is refrigerants and identifies the leak. If the leak is small, we sometimes will need to inject a UV Dye into the system and return to look for it with a UV black light. There are other methods, but these are the two most commonly used and tend to be the most economical for the Sarasota Homeowner.
