Set Your De-Humidistat: Save on Utility Bills While Away

Your de-humidistat can keep your utility bill low when you are leaving your winter home and returning to your spring/summer property.

Take a minute to set your de-humidistat to keep your winter home dry and clean during the warmer, usually wetter weather to come.

1. Find your controls.

If your de-humidistat is like most units, you can probably find it attached to your wall beneath or next to your thermostat. Most units are a white box, have manual controls, like a dial, with numbers and an “On” position.

2. Adjust your setting.

You will want your home to remain below 60% humidity while you are back up north for the summer. 60% is widely considered to be the best setting to protect your furniture and floors from the dangers of too much humidity. You can achieve this by simply setting the de-humidistat to 60% and your thermostat to cool and 82 degrees while you are gone. With this setting the de-humidistat will only allow the AC to run if the humidity in the home is above 60%. Theoretically, it could be 90 degrees in your home, but as long as the relative humidity stays below the 60% we set the de-humidstat for. This lessens run time which in turn saves you money on your utility bill.

Before you close up your home for the season, it is also a good idea to have a preventive maintenance done on the AC system to ensure its trouble-free operation while you are away. Green Cooling Solutions can perform a maintenance for just $89.00.
